Even after 5 weeks there is no shock that Avatar: The Way of Water is still holding strong at the top of the box office, bringing in another $40,600,000 (Domestic) this past weekend. This pushes the sequel to just over $1.9 billion worldwide, a massive success for Disney. These sort of numbers have led James Cameron to admit that the rest of the Avatar sequels will go ahead with The Way of Water surely now will become the 6th film to cross $2 billion.
2022 was a good year for horror movies at the box office with Smile being the standout amongst them. Early on in the year it seems as though nothing will change, with M3GAN getting the genre off to a killer start. The AI horror movie brought in another $21,720,000 (-29%) over the past weekend, which takes it to a total of $60,253,510 (Domestic) and $94,475,510 (Worldwide), with a budget of only $12 million, these are outstanding numbers early in the year.
A Man Called Otto may be in its third week, but don't let that fool you. This weekend was its bigger wide release, with the Tom Hanks led movie bringing in a healthy $15,325,000. It feels as though this will push on from here and hopefully make back its reported $50 million budget, with the help of the international markets.
Newcomer Plane, starring Gerard Butler returned $12,025,000 in its first weekend. With fairly healthy reviews, this could pick up once others drop off, especially as the international release doesn't come for another 2 weeks.
These are estimated numbers over the 4 day holiday weekend.
