Who would’ve thought in 2013 that Thor would be the first character in the MCU to receive a fourth instalment in their franchise? Now, in 2022, here we are and Thor: Love and Thunder opened to a franchise-best $143 million domestically, beating out Ragnarok’s domestic opening ($122,744,989). Love and Thunder finished atop the box office, nearly topped Minions: The Rise of Gru’s second weekend haul ($45,550,420) by $100 million. Love and Thunder’s domestic opening peaked with a $69.5 million haul on the opening Friday.

Love and Thunder’s opening was also good enough for the twelfth-best domestic opening the MCU, sandwiched between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146,510,104), and Iron Man 2 ($128,122,480), but over $40 million under the MCU’s other 2022 release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187,420,998).

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the strongest franchises out there. Even despite Love and Thunder’s massive opening, it didn’t even scratch the surface of the top five biggest domestic openings in the MCU. Avengers: Endgame still reigns supreme with their $357,115,007 opening — the biggest domestic opening of all time. Proceeding Endgame is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which scored $267,138,569 in its opening weekend and has a re-release coming this fall to supplement its overall box office total; Avengers: Infinity War opened to $257,698,183; The Avengers opened to $207,438,708; and Black Panther closes out the top five biggest domestic openings with a $202,003,951 haul.
