It’s that time of year again. An evening that anyone with an inkling of interest in film, Hollywood and showbiz in general will be glued to. Whether it be watching the events unfold live or catching up the next morning: the day(s) after the Oscars are always ripe with discussion about who won, who shouldn’t have, who should have… you get the picture. Here is a quick round up for those wanting to get the essentials of the night…
As many expected, Everything, Everywhere All at Once swept up the majority of the night’s awards (including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress to name but a few), once again showing that its bold, bonkers, multiversal mayhem and heart certainly resonated with many. Brendan Fraser’s return to the spotlight with his committed performance in The Whale earned him the Best Actor. All Quiet on the Western Front’s harrowing and masterful presentation of the horrors of war garnered four awards, including Best International Picture. Blockbuster crowd pleasers: Avatar: The Way of Water (Best Visual Effects), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Best Costume Design) & Top Gun: Maverick (Best Sound), snapped up an award each and several nominations. Lastly, a couple of highlights include Women Talking (Best Adapted Screenplay) & Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (Best Animated Picture). Unfortunately fantastic features including The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans & Tár were depressingly snubbed (they are all brilliant, you should watch them!)
