BAFTA 2021 | NOMINATIONS

As awards season continues, the BAFTA nominations are upon us. The British Academy Film Awards were first awarded in 1949, and have been awarded annually since. Today, Aisling Bea and Susan Wokoma broadcast live on YouTube to give us this years nominations, the ceremony taking place on 11th April. Join us as we give the low-down on nominations, snubs and our predictions for who will take home awards this year.

Chloe Zhao's Nomadland has been sweeping this years nominations, and the BAFTA's is no exception. The western drama starring Frances McDormand has received nominations in eight categories including Best Film, and is expected to perform well. Another popular contender over this years awards season is Minari, which has received nominations in five categories. Other movies with nominations in multiple categories that are expected to take home awards are The Father, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Soul.

Due to the awards ceremony being British, we have some nominations for movies that may not get as much recognition anywhere else. Nick Rowland's Calm with Horses, a dark gritty crime drama about drug-dealers set in Ireland, has received some nominations including Outstanding British Film and Casting. Another popular movie that hasn't received as much recognition at other ceremonies is Saint Maud, Rose Glass' new religious horror. At the BAFTA's, we will see Saint Maud compete in multiple categories including Outstanding British Film and EE Rising Star for lead actress Morfyyd Clark.

The competition is high and the categories are stacked with talent, but once again there are some obvious snubs that cannot be ignored. The biggest of them all that continues to upset the film community is the lack of recognition for Delroy Lindo. His performance in Spike Lee's newest release Da 5 Bloods undoubtedly deserves a nomination in the Leading Actor category, but it has once again fallen short. Another terrific performance that hasn't been nominated this time around is Viola Davis' in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Though the Netflix Original has nominations in other categories, including Lead Actor for the late Chadwick Boseman, an award that we really hope he receives, it's a shame that Viola Davis has missed out. In the same category, Carey Mulligan's performance in divisive yet popular movie Promising Young Woman has been ignored. Though the movie is nominated in many categories, her performance is arguably the movies highlight, meaning she definitely deserved some recognition here.
