An action-comedy by director/writer Nathan Hill. 'Jasper' is a low-budget action-comedy film, but no less entertaining.
Synopsis
Hill stars as Jasper Clay, a private investigator who reluctantly takes on a final case before retirement. Hired by a sex worker to find her missing son, Clay is thrust into the dark criminal world and finds himself in the dangerous hands of the drug cartel. Clay must find the boy, solve the mystery of his kidnapping, and clean up the dangerous streets. In his style, Jasper is out for justice.
Review
It’s a low-budget action-comedy film, but no less entertaining. There are funny animation scenes as if his character is in SIMS or an 80’s/ 90’s video game like GTA (Grand Theft Auto) or James Bond. Completely unexpected, but gives this film an edge.
Flirtatious from the start, we know our protagonist PI is going to get himself into trouble. Hot and steamy trouble first, got to get that naughty boy action in before he gets involved with some drama - there are some pretty explicit scenes, you might cringe or cover your eyes.
The acting is decent - the characters are believable, even in extreme circumstances. Hill is comical, driving the scenes and story along. He’s a man of charm, and everyone falls for him, and all he wants to do is retire.
With good lighting, camera angles, and use of locations, the filming style is to a high standard. The short but sweet fights are well-choreographed and executed. There is an easy to follow storyline and plot, with some twists and turns. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the comedy comes through when Jasper’s rescue mission turns into a sexcapade. He’s banging his way through to find his missing client and her child. Unfortunately for our main man, by the end he’s upset a fair bunch of angry men and ends up paying for his mistakes - but you can tell he doesn’t regret them.
'Jasper' ends with a fight between Jasper and a professional female boxer. This fight is short, but ridiculous as he’s headbutted and loses a tooth. I found the funny side to this. The film ends with the cartel's sex-trafficking ring exposed, and whilst the cops and cartel shoot it out, Jasper walks away as cool as a cucumber.
'Jasper' is a fun action film, filled with plenty of sex and scandal to keep you entertained throughout. If you’re a fan of the film, it’s now been adapted into a novel which you can purchase on Amazon.
