'Project Hail Mary' Review: Gosling Leads With Charm, But the Heart Comes From an Unlikely Companion

Based on Andy Weir’s celebrated novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi marvel that manages to be both intellectually demanding and deeply sentimental. Directed by duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film invites its audience into a cosmic puzzle that starts in a simple classroom and reaches for the stars.
The story follows Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a middle-school science teacher who awakens aboard a spacecraft with no recollection of how he got there, or why. As his memories slowly return through integrated flashbacks, it is revealed that Earth is facing an extinction level threat: a mysterious microorganism is draining energy from the sun and other nearby stars. Grace has been sent on a desperate interstellar mission to find a solution before humanity seizes to exist. Along the way he discovers he is not the only species fighting this cosmic problem, his encounter with an alien engineer Rocky quickly becomes the heart of the film’s narrative. Transforming what begins as a survival story into a tale of courage, ingenuity and friendship across the immensity of space.
Performance wise, Ryan Gosling does a fantastic job of providing a wide array of emotional range: confusion in the early moments with memory loss, frantic curiosity as he pieces together the mission and a growing sense of responsibility once he realizes the stakes. Including balancing humour with vulnerability, when is character understands the impossibility of his return to earth. From that moment on the weight of sacrifice bleeds into every choice and every heavy silence.
The character of Rocky, although not human, is just as memorable. Through creative sound design, body language and translation sequences, the film gives Rocky a distinct personality that comes across as a fascinating contradiction, fundamentally strange and vibrantly curious. Through a mutual shared respect, unwavering connection and determination to problem solve, their dynamic becomes the films emotional core.
Visually, the film is a masterclass in overwhelming tension, contrasted against the terrifying yet beautiful vastness of the void. The interiors are far from flashy, they are cramped, functional environments where every square inch is dedicated to survival, reflecting a design grounded in the urgency of the mission rather than aesthetic appeal. Perhaps, nowhere is this tension more palpable than in the claustrophobic sequences within the tunnel connecting the Hail Mary to Rocky’s craft, in these moments that narrative leans into a heavy, pressurized silence, stripping away the distractions of the mission to focus on the isolation of the two beings, caught between the crushing weight of their shared responsibility and the empty silence of the universe.
One of the film’s most distinctive strengths lies in its intellectual energy, such as the narrative revolving around scientific logic. The process of experiments, calculations and careful observations become just as exciting as any action sequence, with each problem growing into a puzzle that the audience can follow along, eventually becoming a series of thrilling discoveries that gradually unlock the mysterious threat. Yet the films intelligence calibre is not limited to science alone but extends to demonstrate a strong emotional awareness. Beneath the experiments lies a story about trust, empathy and bravery. The relationship built between Grace and Rocky grows in patience, shares curiosity and feels extraordinarily genuine. The emotional pay-off resonates deeply.
By the end, Project Hail Mary becomes more than just a survival science-fiction adventure. It explores how curiosity, compassion and collaboration can bridge even the most unimaginable distances. And succeeds because it treats science and emotion as partners, through engaging performances, breath-taking visuals and a story that values both mind and heart.
