“How’s that for a slice of fried gold?”
Shaun of the Dead is one of the film’s that I can safely say is infinitely rewatchable for me and has been forever quoted and referenced with my mates throughout everyday life, and alongside its Cornetto flavoured peers (Hot Fuzz & The World’s End), makes up one of the best trilogies. I caught this at the cinema last year, but there was no way I was missing the chance to see it in its glorious 4K remastered edition with a guest Q&A.
We all know how riotous and hilarious the film is and with a packed Odeon Leicester Square audience of fans iconic moments such as Shaun’s walk to the shop, “You’ve got red on you.”, “There’s a girl in the garden.”, heading to the Winchester and waiting for all this to blow over and of course the Don’t Stop Me Now jukebox pool cue bonanza feel even more special.
After the film writer/director Edgar Wright and stars Nick Frost, Lucy Davis and Kate Ashfield took to the stage for a Q&A. Unfortunately Simon Pegg couldn’t be there in person due to illness, but he briefly appeared via Edgar Wright’s mobile phone to send his well wishes, thanks and cackle at the idea of a lega-sequel in his 70’s. Wright and co. fondly remembered filming the sequences in Philip’s (Bill Nighy) Jaguar and the killer Queen set piece, Frost reminiscing on his first jump from TV to the big screen, the dedication of the Spaced fans who showed up and spent their time as zombie extras and how despite the old school ringtones and smoking indoors, the film still remains timeless.
A fun evening with great gory vibes and a packed audience (several of which Wright mentions helped work on the film) made this anniversary feel bloody special. Now, let’s head to the Winchester and wait for all this to blow over and do it again for Hot Fuzz’s 20th birthday in 3 years.
