'We Were Tomorrow: Season 1 Episode 1 - Eden' Review: Solid Start to This Fantasy Series

We Were Tomorrow

We Were Tomorrow is a drama-fantasy TV series about twins Evelyn and Noah who travel through three lifetimes to discover their destiny with their friends Warrick and Siena. Their search is complicated by Cain, an immortal being known as an ancient, who learns they possess the key to return to Earth and hunts them down to stop them.

Episode one opens with stunning aerial footage of snowy mountains and hectic storms that have frozen the planet. A brother and a sister walk in the snow, letting audiences know they are not from Earth. We learn about their people, how they came to earth, and why. You’ll see inspirations from The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and many Sci-Fi series - all building the dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and alien concept. The whole episode is very well shot, with some nice stills and good use of locations.

The story arc follows learning about the Ancients (the first to come to Earth) and Alchemists, who govern a portal between Earth and Aerawyn (a world sheltered from sight). Most humans are limited to one life, but to save their race they had to rebirth it, and The Alchemists gave everyone three lives. Evelyn and Noah were born together and can travel/have multiple timelines/lives together. They have special blood which allows them to travel to Earth. Now Cian, a cursed ancient, learns how powerful the twins are, and now must stop them before they fulfil their destiny of finding their other halves and re-building mankind. The twins will have to learn who they can and cannot trust as they’re hunted through their three lifetimes.

The acting is decent but borderline cheesy, so there were multiple times I didn’t take the show as seriously. However, I did enjoy this as it made me think back to '90s/00s teen dramas, where the acting was so bad it was so good, and through that lens, I really enjoyed the episode.

The makeup and hair can be over-the-top and added to the cheese. (The big white Gandalf beard - just no. His character would have been more effective without).

Whilst the story is well-detailed and easy enough to follow there were times I was left a little confused and had unanswered questions. I presume these will be addressed in future episodes. This pilot introduces a lot of characters which is hard to keep up with and figure out their parts and where they’re going. The script needed some work. Again, some lines were cheesy, instead of inspiring or enlightening, and lacked depth and direction.

We Were Tomorrow

The episode ends abruptly, but is intriguing enough to want to follow on, and leaves information out so you’ll need to watch the next episode. Clever.

The pilot episode for We Were Tomorrow is entertaining, with an interesting topic, and characters you’ll want to invest in. I predict this will be a strong series, but worry how it will all tie together in the end.
