What would you do if your fiancé used his celebrity sex pass before the wedding? For small-town hairdresser Gail Daughtry, there is only one reasonable option: go with your bestie to LA to track down your childhood celebrity crush Jon Hamm. Naturally.

Directed by David Wain and co-written with Ken Marino, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass takes a fairly straightforward relationship dilemma and sends it careering into increasingly ridiculous territory. Gail is happily engaged to her high-school sweetheart, Tom, until he takes full advantage of their celebrity pass arrangement after meeting his chosen star at a book signing. Rather than quietly reconsidering her wedding plans, Gail joins her friend Otto on a mission to find her own celebrity exception. Her target? None other than Mad Men star Jon Hamm.

The whole set-up is gloriously daft, and the film wastes little time turning Gail's personal crisis into a full-blown Hollywood escapade. With a psychic providing questionable advice, a collection of unlikely allies joining the expedition, and Italian assassins complicating matters, this is hardly a conventional story about working through relationship difficulties.

In the airport on their way to La La Land, in true Dumb and Dumber style, a case is swapped, and Gail is now the target of two Italian assassins, but luckily they’re not the smartest tools in the shed. But their random antics give the film an extra dimension and it’s refreshing to have some decent, funny secondary characters back in our movies.

Zoey Deutch leads the adventure as Gail, with Jon Hamm, Jennifer Anniston and John Slattery adding an entertaining layer of celebrity self-awareness to the mix. The involvement of Slattery is particularly fitting given his connection to Hamm through Mad Men, while the wider cast, including Ken Marino, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang and Sabrina Impacciatore, gives the story plenty of characters to throw into the chaos. Elizabeth Banks also has a cameo and is so much fun. Every character has great chemistry and comedic timing which keeps the one hour and thirty minute pace moving.

The film plays with the fantasy of celebrity access and the idea that famous people might somehow exist outside the ordinary rules of relationships. Of course, the reality of chasing a celebrity across Hollywood, while getting caught up in an increasingly elaborate mess, is rather different from simply naming someone on a list. But it works and it’s such a fun ride hoping that Gail cheats on her fiancé. The premise also provides an opportunity to poke fun at Hollywood's curious relationship with fame, where being recognised can be both an advantage and a rather inconvenient complication.

Now you’ll think, does Gail get to actually sleep with John Hamm, and does she then go back to her fiancé and they live happily ever after? Well you’ll have to watch and find out. But honestly I'd watch for the fight scene about one hour and five minutes in - it really made me laugh.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass takes a ridiculous question and follows it to its most absurd conclusion. It's a playful Hollywood romp with romance, revenge, questionable decisions and one very elusive celebrity at its centre.

Gail might have started out wanting to even the score with her fiancé, but her trip to Los Angeles proves that getting even can become considerably more complicated than expected. And if nothing else, perhaps this is a reminder to think very carefully before agreeing to a celebrity pass in the first place.
