The first of three press panel interviews we covered at MCM Comic Con, the glorious gathering of all things geekdom and fandom. Dan Fogler has been a part of many recognisable franchises: from the Wizarding World, The Walking Dead, Hannibal, Kung-Fu Panda and he will also be making his debut in House of the Dragon next year.
Fogler began the conference focusing on his other passion project: comic books. He grew up writing and drawing comics with his older brother and his inspirations for his creative process gel between whichever project he is working on. He discussed his works including Fishkill & Brooklyn Gladiator (both of which I am very intrigued to give a read). He exclaimed his love for Heavy Metal magazine (and the film inspired by it), which he has drawn several influences from. We should also look out for the expansion of the “Fogler-verse”, as he has prequels, epilogues and a second volume of Brooklyn Gladiator in the works.
Memories From Fantastic Beasts
My question for Fogler was if he had a particular memory or moment from the first Fantastic Beasts that stood out to him, as the film is coming up to its 10th anniversary next year. The memory that stood out to him was when his character (Jacob Kowalski) first meets Newt (Eddie Redmayne), as the pair first meet and are both sat on the bench outside the bank and (to quote Fogler), Newt is nervous, asking “Where’s my fucking Niffler?” He immediately compared the pair of them to Abbott and Costello, and how looking at the pair of them makes us (the audience) think “There’s a good duo!” He reminisced on the myriad of physical comedy moments throughout shooting that brought him the most joy on set.
Fogler also went in depth and gushed over practical effects legend Greg Nicotero’s work on The Walking Dead and the level of energy, the scale of production scale and commitment of the cast and crew to craft the hugely successful immersive zombie world. He learned many skills including archery and horse riding, which as a “city boy” he never expected to do.
Lastly, when asked about dream future projects, he brought up James Mangold (of whom he recently worked with on A Complete Unknown) and how he will “drop him a little text” when Mangold’s upcoming Star Wars film begins production or if they can “squeeze one more movie out of him” in regards to Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones or a potential Short Round spin-off.
