Episode 7 "Like a Keith in the Night" - 4/5

With the secret of Earth 2 finally out, the 11th Street Kids need to get the hell out, however with Economos tied down (literally), Chris and Harcourt trapped in A.R.G.U.S. and Adebayo running for her life that is not an easy task.

After episode 6’s grand reveal Gunn picks off right from that moment with a hysterical mural gag and doubles down on Chris’ complete and utter lack of focus on Earth 2 aside from himself and his father and brother. Vigilante is very much loving his alternate self and the pair team up to dish out justice on Economos’ captors. Lastly, Adebayo is assisted by the Cheeto loving Judomaster (who followed Chris into the portal in episode 5) as she is pursued by the racist hordes.

Peacemaker Nears Its Finale With a Powerful Twist

After another swift twist that hits hard for Peacemaker (Cena’s performance is fantastic, especially in this particular pivotal moment), we arrive back on the DCU Earth with A.R.G.U.S. ready and waiting. With an hour long finale episode arriving this week I’m excited to see how Gunn brings it all together!

Episode 1 "The Ties That Grind" - 4/5

After 3 years and an entire universe reset, Peacemaker returns to the small screen. As a huge fan of the character in The Suicide Squad and the first season bringing the goofiness, gore, heart and rawness to the masses and introducing the world to the 11th Street Kids (as well as one of the greatest show intros of all time), it was about damn time for season 2 to role around.

After a somewhat lengthy (and necessary) ‘Previously in the DCU’ (yep, that’s the DCU), Gunn swiftly establishes this new timeline/universe and gets us back on track with Christopher Smith’s current situation. Taking place after the events of the first season and Superman, Peacemaker (John Cena) interviews for a spot on The Justice Gang, while Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) struggles to find work on the heels of Adebayo's bombshell press conference. Economos is forced to surveil Peacemaker under Rick Flag, Sr.'s (Frank Grillo) new management.

This first episode hits the accelerator and gets us off to the races, with Peacemaker suffering from resentment and bitterness at his past mistakes preventing him from being seen as a ‘true hero’, (the suitably puerile, snarky appearances from Hawkgirl, Guy Gardener & Maxwell Lord carry over their cocky, immature bravado seen in Superman in his Justice Gang interview) before he stumbles across a mysterious dimension doorway to what looks to be a potential dream life for him. Sure, the multiverse concept has been done to death, but Gunn and co. will no doubt have fresh and twisted ideas up their sleeves. However, it’s Harcourt that takes the spotlight here, with a brutal, bloody bar brawl and pent up therapist diagnosed “toxic masculinity” her arc is set to be one of the show’s main focal points. Returning players Adebayo, Economos and of course, Vigilante (of whom now has developed an owl obsession) are great to be reunited with.

Easter Eggs, Opening Credits, and What Season 2 Promises

Armed with a fresh new universe, a multidimensional playing board, a focus on a pissed off and lost Harcourt and Peacemaker, geeky Easter Eggs galore already and a stellar new opening credits, Season 2 is off to a great start!

Episode 2 "A Man Is Only as Good As His Bird" - 4/5

After episode 1 seamlessly integrated Peacemaker into James Gunn’s new DCU, checked us back in with the now split-up-yet-still-buddies 11th Street Kids and established the overarching multi-versal narrative, episode 2 sees Economos get a new handler, Fleury, after failing to distract Flag from Peacemaker. While Adebayo deals with Keeya issues, Peacemaker handles the bloody dimensional aftermath of the previous episode as A.R.G.U.S. takes action.

It’s quickly apparent that Fleury (played by Tim Meadows) is going to be a series highlight. His deadpan, off-kilter sarcastic tone and eccentric swiftly witty nicknames (Economos is now ‘Ginger Cool’) and graphic imagery (what he was having done whilst Economos was learning about Pokemon terminology) makes him instantly a jolt of goofy, bizarre energy in a show already filled with unique characters. The 11th Street Kids reunion on Hardcourt’s roof is simultaneously melancholic yet also sparks joy as the group reunite. Lastly, the MVP Eagly, gets a gory, slapstick, brutal and chaotic fight scene as he protects Peacemaker’s home from the A.R.G.U.S agents infiltration.

A Haunted Hero, a Drunken Choice, and a Promise of Chaos

As Peacemaker himself struggles with a bout of depression (and haunted by the sight of his own dead body which he killed) he drunkenly takes a step that has certainly once again got me hyped for episode 3!

Episode 3 "Another Rick Up My Sleeve" - 4/5

After episode 2 saw Peacemaker take the full big step in this new reality, this episode sees him fully plant his feet in. As Peacemaker receives praise as a hero, he uses the alternate dimension to deepen his bond with Harcourt. Meanwhile, Economos faces criticism for the mission's failure and A.R.G.U.S. prepare for round 2 with Eagly.

I won’t delve into spoilers (and stay off social media as theories and probabilities are running rampant), but there is something not quite right about this alternate reality (the devil is in the details) and I am intrigued to learn more. At the forefront though this is Peacemaker living his dream and kicking incredible amounts of ass in brutal and gory fashion and connecting with Harcourt. Standout Jennifer Holland performance here as she switches up from Harcourt’s usual hard edged stony demeanour and a welcome return of a familiar face also gets to showcase the goofier side of his character.

Back in the DCU Earth, the 11th Street Gang reawakens in a hungover state and Economos is introduced to his new mission and peers: alongside the still hilarious bird blindness suffering Fleury, we are introduced to Michael Rooker’s bizarre, eagle hunting Red St. Wild and the return of the Cheeto chomping wildcard, snark machine Judomaster.

Humor, Gore, Intrigue, and Economos’ Big Dilemma

Once again this episode of Peacemaker delivers the laughs, the blood, the intrigue and the bird blindness. A tight 35 minutes speeds along introducing us into this alternate universe and sets up a true dilemma for Economos that we’ll see in episode 4.

Episode 4 "Need I Say Door" - 3.5/5

Opening with an intriguing, brutal and gory flashback, episode 4 peels back another layer of Peacemaker’s past by teasing the origin of the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Back in the present A.R.G.U.S. executes round two of laying siege on Chris’ home, whilst a down on her luck Harcourt receives a tempting offer from Rick Flag Sr.

This episode feels more like an extended tension building and could somewhat be seen more as a ‘filler’ entry. That being said, it still has some standout moments. Economos’ lines and Steve Agee’s performance have been standout this season and it continues here with his berating of Judomaster (Nhut Le) & Red St. Wild (Michael Rooker) or “Captain Cultural Appropriation” as Economos dubs him. Rooker’s trippy, distant and off-kilter performance and snippets of his powers showcase Gunn’s appreciation and commitment to DC’s most bizarre roster.

Cracks in the Team as Rick Flag Sr. Looms

A scrappy action set piece between Peacemaker & Judomaster takes centre stage and leads into Ads and Vigilante joining Chris on the run in a desperate attempt to switch the QUC location. Next episode will certainly see 11th Street Kids on the rocks and tearing at the seams as a desperate and conflicted Harcourt and a Peacemaker torn between one reality and another organise to meet… with Rick Flag Sr. watching every move.

Episode 5 "Back to the Suture" - 4/5

After episode 4’s tension building Harcourt/A.R.G.U.S. set up to capture Peacemaker, episode 5 jumps straight into the fray as the strike team line Chris up in the crosshairs… and Rick Flag Sr. gets some brutal, bloody one-on-one time with him in the interrogation room. This episode allows Cena to once again flex his mature, dramatic acting muscles. The choices made and things said in this episode once again showcase how much of an interesting and complex character Peacemaker is.

Eagly gets another standout moment in a genuinely epic and gnarly set piece as he faces off against Red St. Wild, which once again emphasises Gunn’s celebration of all creatures great and small. Lastly, the 11th Street Kids band together in sadness and determination, to embark on a journey that I am already counting down to next week for. Backed by some top tunes (a superb snippet of November Rain) as we head into episode 6, “Ready for the next adventure pal?”. Certainly am!

Episode 6 "Ignorance is Chris" - 4/5

⚠️SPOILER WARNING⚠️

Well, it’s finally here, the big reveal of what many had suspected and been feverishly speculating over the past 6 weeks! As The 11th Street Kids find themselves in Earth-2 looking for Chris to bring him home, the cracks in Peacemaker’s dream world are on full display and turn into a tidal wave of bad news in the final moments.

However, leading up to this moment we see Peacemaker experiencing everything he could have wanted: adoration, super heroics and a loving brother and father, whilst his home earth friends enter this bizarre reality of which Chris has become infatuated with. After a peek behind the curtain at Vigilante’s home life (meeting his sweet, bubbly mother… of whom he is absurdly rude to and has told that Harcourt is his girlfriend) and seeing his stash of cash, coke and… beanie babies, we enter the alternate earth.

Harcourt heads straight to A.R.G.U.S. for a fiery and emotional one-to-one with Peacemaker, Vigilante excitedly recreates the Spider-Man pointing meme (canon in both universes apparently) and Adebayo makes the mistake of taking a walk outside… because it turns out everyone here is a Nazi. Yep, as many had guessed over the past few episodes this perfect world is actually a white supremacist led nightmare and despite the show’s brazen comedic chops, the way Gunn constructs the flag reveal, to Adebayo running away from the horde of racist zombies, coupled with the score is genuinely shocking and terrifying.

Next episode is set up to be a wild one and I can’t wait to see what Gunn has cooked up!
