Episode 1 - "No Strings" 4/5
Vision lives and works in a traditional Scottish pub in Edinburgh, once frequented by him and Wanda Maximoff. Within his mind, several AIs — J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., D.U.M.-E., U., and E.D.I.T.H. — help him better understand humanity while keeping Ultron imprisoned. Vision struggles to come to terms with his past and memories of Wanda, a group of mercenaries led by bounty hunter Paladin attempts to capture him. Forced to flee after the attack, Vision discovers Ultron has betrayed him, while Paladin captures a young man claiming to be his son, Tommy Maximoff.
The trailers for this were excellent and really hooked my interest in jumping back into the MCU’s TV outing, also I still stand by WandaVision being their best small screen outing so far. After a speedy catch-up to where this Vision is mentally and physically, we spend substantial time in the glorious production design, vibrant colour palette and quirky homestead of his mind where he is joined by the other MCU artificial intelligence programs. It’s a joy to see Spader back as the smarmy Ultron and I can’t believe we got Diane Morgan mentioning “comparing Thanos to a scrotum.” in the MCU.
Episode 2 - "Theseus" 4/5
A year earlier, Tommy begins recovering memories of his life as Vision and Wanda’s son after a near-death experience. While being transported to a psychiatric facility, he meets Lisa and discovers his super-speed abilities, allowing them to escape. In the present, Vision tracks Tommy to the facility, where Paladin and his mercenaries are waiting. Despite warnings from the AIs, Vision attempts to rescue Tommy but is seriously wounded in the process.
Delivering a substantial focus on the backstory of Tommy’s mental state, powers and paranoia, this second episode shifts away the focus from Vision until its ruthless and intense action-packed final third. Great to see Paul Bettany unleash a darker side to the character and the commitment to B/C-tier lister Paladin’s cold-blooded motivations, yet nailing the goofy costume is great stuff.
