One man’s faith is tested to its maximum limit after the loss of his wife puts him in sole custody of his three children. Bassam Tariq collaborates with academy award winning Mahershala Ali on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. After the pair worked together in development on Marvel Studios’ now shelved Blade project they decided to make lemonade out of lemons on a project that puts all of Ali’s sword training to good use. If a new Blade film is the sacrifice for a beautifully emotive gnarly piece of cinema, then it was more than worth it.

What is Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother about?

In Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother Latif’s (Mahershala Ali) life is turned on its head when his wife dies. Left in the charge of his three children Fatiha, Qadir, and a newborn baby, he has to try and provide for them all whilst being simultaneously embroiled in a hit job on a cult evangelical leader Pastor Hwan (John Cho). All of this whilst trying to find natural milk for the baby due to an allergy to formula. It’s a juggling act for Latif working out which sacrifices are the ones that need to be made.

One of the most prevalent themes of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is grief, and how it intertwines with faith. In the beginning, Latif refuses to bow his head whilst he is praying, he is struggling to connect with his faith when something so cruel has happened to him and his family. It perfectly captures how all consuming grief can be and how it can disconnect you from the things you were once so sure of.

Faith doesn’t just clash with grief in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother as Latif has to confront how his professional life fits into the new circumstances he has been thrust into. Things like attending mosque with his family, or going out to dinner with them, is juxtaposed with his murderous occupation. His journey becomes dependent on his skills when he is forced to carry out a hit to keep his children safe. The tension is palpable as the love for his children clashes with his obligations to a life he doesn’t necessarily want to live anymore.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother turns from an interesting dramatic action film into something altogether more transcendental due to some final act movie magic. When Latif goes to confront Pastor Hwan and his followers he is outnumbered and killed. This moment is interjected with Fatiha, distraught, praying for him. He jitters awake seemingly brought back from the dead. It’s an intense moment to experience, but this miracle is a perfect distillation of everything the film is trying to say. It connects back to grief in that when our world is changed it can spiral us into the darkest places. But no matter how far we go it’s the people we love who can resurrect us. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is a testament to life, to faith in all its different forms, and to the importance of family chosen or not.

'Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother' releases in UK cinemas on November 20, 2026.
