This lush, emotional, and joyfully melodic indie gem, Dream!, from Thailand, reawakens the long-silent voice of a nation’s musical legacy. At its center is a young girl, a breath-taking journey, and a reminder that magic often comes with a melody. In English and inspired by Rogers and Hammerstein, this is a must-watch for all musical lovers.

What is the film 'Dream!' about?

At its heart lies a lovely coming-of-age musical. Set against the rich tapestry of rural and urban Thailand, Dream! follows 10-year-old Lek, played with disarming sincerity by newcomers Amata Masmalai (actress) and Tori Woodman (singing voice). After fleeing her mountain village, Lek embarks on a journey that straddles fantasy and reality, seeking a place and a family to call her own.

Newcomer Masmalai brings a quiet strength and natural charm to Lek, while veteran Thai stars like Vithaya Pansringarm and Sahajak Boonthanakit lend gravitas and warmth to their roles. Broadway’s Adam Kaokept adds another layer of theatrical flair, bridging the film’s Thai roots and global aspirations. There are a lot of child performers in this film, and they all do a fantastic, energetic job of bringing this story to life. Masmalai has some beautiful moments, especially at the end. Very powerful performance from someone so young.

The film features many memorable musical numbers that flow seamlessly into the narrative. These aren’t just songs, they’re extensions of the characters’ dreams, fears, and hopes. Composer Mickey Wongsathapornpat spent two years shaping a score that channels the golden age of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the result is nothing short of exquisite.

Elio (2025) review

Sweeping, orchestral, and deeply emotional, the music is brought to life, feeling nostalgic yet utterly fresh. As a huge musical theatre fan, I can also see this wonderful piece of work on the stage, so I do hope it has a run in live theatre in the future. Everyone’s voices are fantastic too - an exceptional high standard.

The story and plot are not difficult to understand; we mostly follow Lek on her journey, meeting new friends and discovering who she is. There’s a cute section where she looks like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, pigtails included, helping showcase her adventure. If anything, the film does run long at two hours and twenty-two minutes, and it feels this way. Some scenes/sections could be cut without taking away from the overall arc and story. But, there is a nice little interval for you to run and grab a drink and snack.

Dream! is also a visual feast. There are beautiful, spectacular views of the vast landscapes and expensive, well-designed properties, and cosy, quaint streets. The production value is incredibly high.

Towards the end, Lek has been on a transformative journey - but what did she learn? Well, there’s a wonderful full-circle moment where she finds a Christmas tree, all lit up in splendor, but she doesn’t have anyone to share the moment with. While scavenging for food and when all hope is lost, a man and woman dressed as Santa and a Princess find Lek, and they become one big happy family. It’s happy and wholesome.

Is 'Dream!' Worth watching?

Yes! This film is special as it gently honours Thailand’s musical heritage while carving out a bold new future. This film reclaims a cinematic form that historically left Thai voices out. Now, they’re singing center stage, and I hope to see more musical films like this in the future. All I know is, I came away from watching this musical singing for the rest of the day. If you love heartfelt cinema with rich cultural roots and filled with music, this is a must-watch.
