'Eyelashes' Review: A Promising Character Study That Falls Slightly Short

Short films often thrive on clarity of purpose, and Eyelashes certainly has one. Framed around identity, faith and personal ambition, it sets out to explore the difficult choices faced by a young man navigating life in a new city. There’s an immediacy to its premise that feels both relevant and quietly compelling, even if the execution doesn’t always match that initial promise.
The film follows a newcomer to London who finds himself caught between his Islamic faith and an opportunity that could reshape his future. What unfolds is a character-driven dilemma, one that leans into internal conflict rather than external stakes. It’s a simple setup, but one that carries weight, particularly in how it reflects the pressures of expectation and self-identity.
Where Eyelashes works best is in its intent. There’s a clear sincerity in how it approaches its subject matter, never reducing its central conflict to something overly simplistic. Moments of reflection feel grounded, and there’s an effort to present both sides of the protagonist’s dilemma with a degree of empathy. It’s a film that understands the importance of what it’s trying to say, even if it doesn’t always find the most engaging way to say it.
That said, the film struggles to fully capitalise on its themes. At just 15 minutes, the pacing can feel uneven, with certain emotional beats arriving before they’ve been given enough room to resonate. The storytelling occasionally feels a little too direct, spelling out its ideas rather than allowing them to develop more naturally. As a result, the impact is softened, particularly in moments that should carry more weight.
In the end, Eyelashes is a well-intentioned short that raises meaningful questions without quite delivering the depth its premise suggests. There’s enough here to appreciate — particularly in its themes and central performance — but it never quite comes together as cohesively as it might have.
'Eyelashes' was selected for the 2026 Cleveland International Film Festival
