REVIEW | SHE-HULK: EPISODE 5

"MEAN, GREEN, AND STRAIGHT POURED INTO THESE JEANS"

Written by Alex Gilston / September 17, 2022

Jameela Jamil returns as Titania in the latest episode of She-Hulk and she forces Jennifer Walters to try and come to terms with her new identity.

At the end of episode four of She-Hulk Jennifer was served papers by Titania suing her as she claimed she owned the trademark She-Hulk. Jennifer enlists the aid of her fellow Super-Human Law division colleague Mallory Book (Renée Elise Goldsberry) to help her win the case against Titania. If anything this episode proves that She-Hulk thrives in the courtroom. Where there may have been a bit of a plateau in the comedy last week, this week it’s simply hilarious throughout. Jennifer has to go to an embarrassing extreme to prove that she actively wants to own the moniker of She-Hulk, using her Tinder profile as evidence. Queue one of the best lines of the entire series and the name of this week’s episode “Mean, Green, and Straight poured into these jeans.” It’s the kind of awkwardly funny moment we’ve come to expect from the series and in the moment begs for a full on belly laugh. But beyond the jokes this storyline is showing that Jennifer Walters is finally starting to feel comfortable with her new found super-powered life. It feels like the series is dealing with her character development very well considering the episode lengths leave a lot to be desired.

On the B-Side of this week's She-Hulk, Jennifer’s assistant Nikki is tasked with finding a fashion designer for superheroes to help find Jennifer a new Hulk-friendly style. After wading through some bootleg Avengers merchandise they get an appointment with Luke Jacobson, the Edna Mode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The usual “costume reveal” that we have become accustomed to in the MCU is recontextualised a little bit here as Luke takes on the task of designing a garment that’s interchangeable for both Jennifer and She-Hulk.

This leads into the ending of the episode. We don’t get to see Jennifer’s new costume just yet, but the glimpse of a familiar cowl more than suggests who is going to be the “Cameo of the week” in Episode six.
