'Together' Review: Alison Brie & Dave Franco Shine in a Disturbing New Horror Romance

Years into their relationship, Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie) find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country. With tensions already flaring, an encounter with an unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.

Original horror is having a real ball at the cinema this year. With the masterful period drama, music, vampiric mash-up that is Sinners. The gnarly, raw, grief stricken and unsettling Bring Her Back, and just this last weekend, Zach Cregger’s multi-character focused, gory, small town mystery Weapons. Whilst Together may not quite reach the heights of those aforementioned features, it offers up a darkly comedic, gross out tale of co-dependency.

Not to start off on too much of a negative note, but it is undeniable that there are a myriad of plot elements that you will have seen before (Men & The Substance swiftly sprung to mind) and the actual reveal itself, whilst suitably twisted, isn’t given fully enough time to be explored further in depth. That being said, for the majority of the time Together is (quite literally at times) a tug of war between keeping the spark of romance alive, fear of change and a smattering of cackle worthy (*that* cubicle scene) and wince inducing sequences that will plaster a grin on the faces of body horror fans.

Stylish Direction, Eerie Setting, and Standout Scares

Stylistically the film is well shot and offers up a suitably isolated, eerie and forest homestead for the centrepiece of the strangeness. There are some excellent trippy camera angles, a couple of ferocious jump-scares and lighting that will have you squinting around the frame just enough to catch a glimpse of the horror in the dark. The third act is a barragement of fitting gross out practicality and the usage of the Spice Girls (yep, really) is one of the year’s highlights.

Together is very much a two person show. Franco’s slacker, trauma ridden, lost and distant yet desperate for affection Tim and Brie’s snappy, mature go-getter Millie, make for a sharp paring and have charming and fiery chemistry together. Lastly, Damon Herriman’s Jamie fills in the cracks between the pair which cause splinters of tension.

Together Delivers a Twisted, Entertaining Slice of Body Horror

This is another solid original horror flick that may be held back by ideas seen executed more effectively in prior features. However, Together offers a deviously twisted, tense, and well-acted slice of darkly funny, romantic body horror that should please fans of the genre.
