Independent horror has a long tradition of tackling themes far bigger than the budgets they’re made on. Ten Doors, directed by Gordon Price and James Person, is very much in that lineage: a moody supernatural thriller with ambition to spare. Clocking in at just over 80 minutes, it weaves together faith, fate, and the paranormal into a puzzle-like narrative where not every piece quite clicks into place.

What is the film Ten Doors about?

The film introduces us to three writers, Adora Hall, Gabriel Porter, and Kenzie Barlow, each of whom has a brush with the supernatural. Their stories overlap in strange, shifting ways, as if we’re watching fragments of different realities stitched together.

Rather than straightforward ghostly encounters, the narrative leans on metaphor. The “doors” of the title are both literal and symbolic, gateways to truths the characters may not be ready to face. It’s an intriguing hook, though one that demands patience from the viewer.

Where Ten Doors succeeds most is in its mood. The filmmakers conjure an eerie atmosphere with clever use of lighting and sound design. For an indie production, the visual and audio craft is polished, and they make good use of using the outside space.

The decision to keep much of the horror psychological rather than visceral works in its favour. Instead of jump scares, there’s a slow-burn unease that leaves you second-guessing what’s real. There’s intense visuals, such as a burning cross, the woman in white walking through the garden and a striking death scene involving a cross. Fans of surreal or cerebral horror will appreciate this approach, while those craving gore or fast shocks may find the experience a little too subdued.

While not every line lands, the three leads throw themselves into the material, especially in moments where they’re caught between dread and revelation. The three writer-protagonists have compelling starting points, but their arcs don’t always deepen in satisfying ways. The acting is decent, with everyone committing to their roles. But some performances lack confidence and energy and then scenes fall flat.

The film sometimes lingers too long on atmosphere at the expense of narrative drive. In an 80-minute feature, even small drags can feel noticeable. While mystery is part of the charm, the script occasionally veers into vagueness. By the end, some viewers may feel more confused than enlightened.

Is the film Ten Doors worth watching?

Ten Doors is a curious little indie. It doesn’t always stick the landing, but it deserves credit for trying something different within a genre that often plays it safe. With themes of spirituality, consequence for your choices and life's purpose, this film is full of thought-provoking topics. If you enjoy indie horror that makes you think, if you like the uncertainty of a story that withholds as much as it reveals, then this is worth unlocking. Just be prepared for a film that values questions more than answers.
